Speicherbalg Probleme mit den Verstärkungsbrettchen

Beitrag von Volker »

Hallo Leute,

Hello Volker, no problem at all! This is a beautifull bellows unit. It has no use to try to improve the construction in such a way that the "problems" you meant disappear. The effect you tell about is present in every reserve bellows built with this principle.
But still I will try to explain you the "strange" behaviour of the leather of the reserve bellows.

Other than the pumping bellows, the reserve does not function symmetrically as you said. With the pumper, the theoretical centre of the moving blades is on the bissectrice (Winkelhalbierende),and almost but not exactly on the intersection point of the angle of the moving and the two fixed blades. So everything is constructed in almost equal pairs (symmetric) and moves theoretically almost perfect. The two fixed blades and the moving blades have the same dimensions, so the ends of the blades exactly meet when they come together.

For the reserve (Speicherbalg) it is a different story. In most drawings the moving upper blade is made as long as the bottom blade, measured from the ending block. No problem, but... the moving point is not placed on the bissectrice of the two blades, but on the upper blade itself and far from the intersection point. So in the lower position the two blades do not meet at the end, but the upper blade seems to be to short. In the corner there is not a symmetrical movement with the result that the leather bulges a bit in a strange way. You can compensate that by making the upper blade longer to solve the problem of the shifted meeting point. This does not solve the problem of the bulging leather in the small corner near the block. Theoretically simply there is no solution for this problem.
So you always will have an optimum only. What I always do is:
- make the upper blade somewhat larger so in the lower position it meets the bottomblade on the end. This prevents a problem on the "nose"of the bellows
- make the Verstärkungsbrettchen 2 or 3 cm shorter than until the corner to give the leather in the corner enough room to compensate the mathematical deviation
- make the block with the air channels as low as possible. The lower, the less mathematical deviation
- make the upper blade to rise not to much. The name "Speicherbalg" is somewhat misleading: the most important function is to regulate the pressure of the wind and the second function is to have some spare wind for passages where suddenly more wind is used by the organ. Normally you only see the upper blade move a little bit.

Anyway: leather compensates all mismovements easily and during its work the blade hardly moves (as long as the capacity of the bellows unit is sufficient).

Hallo Piet,
danke für die Infos. Ich habe deine Erklärungen weitestgehend verstanden.
Trotz meines schlechten Englisch! :D
